Community Services NSW is an agency of the Department of Family and Community Serices in the Government of New South Wales that is responsible for promoting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people and to build stronger families and communities, with a focus on those who are vulnerable and most in need in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
The agency was established initially as the Department of Community Services and a number of pieces of legislation guide its activities; namely the Child Welfare (Commonwealth Agreement Ratification) Act, 1941 (NSW), the Child Welfare (Commonwealth Agreement Ratification) Act, 1962 (NSW), the Community Welfare Act, 1987 (NSW), the Children (Care and Protection) Act, 1987 (NSW), the Community Services (Complaints, Reviews and Monitoring) Act, 1993 (NSW), the Children and Young Person (Care and Protection) Act, 1998 (NSW), the Children And Young Persons Legislation (Repeal And Amendment) Act, 1998 (NSW), and the Adoption Act, 2000 (NSW), plus a range of regulations.
The agency is led by its Chief Executive, presently Maree Walk, who reports to the Minister for Family and Community Services, presently the Hon. Pru Goward MP.
Community service delivers four key services, namely prevention and early intervention, child protection, out-of-home care, and disaster welfare in cases of emergency relief.[1]
